Snap, Snap, Snap, Snap

I was out filming a Tree Swallow pair that is feeding their very young chicks. I was letting the shutter fly (snap, snap, snap, snap) to catch the birds arriving and departing the house when I caught something else.

Tree Swallows in Motion

Over the past few weeks, I’ve filmed a few different Tree Swallow pairs. Here are some photos showing their amazing agility coming-and-going as they incubated and fed their chicks. House J April 23, 2025 House T April 23, 2025 April 27, 2025 This House… Continue Reading “Tree Swallows in Motion”

The Dickcissel

What a weird name for a bird. The name was first documented in the 19th century, reflecting the bird’s vocalization. When the Dickcissels first arrive here at our place each Spring (which is quite late compared to other species), it changes the entire tone… Continue Reading “The Dickcissel”

The Baltimore Oriole

Like the Orchard Oriole, that I highlighted in my last post, the Baltimore Oriole also winters in southern Mexico and northern South America. They can also be found during the “off season” in most of Florida and across the Caribbean. A couple of weeks… Continue Reading “The Baltimore Oriole”

The Orioles

We have two species of Orioles that travel from their winter home to breed in our little farm-gone-wild. The Orchard Oriole travels from southern Mexico and northern South America. The Orchard Orioles arrive and, like most birds that migrate from long distances, they need… Continue Reading “The Orioles”

Bell’s Vireo

The noteworthy Bird reference site, AllAboutBirds says this about the Bell’s Vireo, “A tireless little bird of thickets and thorn scrub, the Bell’s Vireo nests from the Midwest to the Southwest and into northern Mexico. Though plain in plumage, males sing so energetically and… Continue Reading “Bell’s Vireo”

Bluebirds

The Bluebird couples in Birdhouse R and S, on the East side of our property, have fledged their chicks! Yesterday, I saw a male Bluebird in the tree that sits quite close to House R, so I suspect that he and his mate are… Continue Reading “Bluebirds”

What? A Skink.

There’s a massive tree at the southeast corner of our property that has seen better days. My 80 year old neighbor, Willard, who drives around our “neighborhood” in his fancy, air-conditioned ATV – and who stops by to chat when he sees me out… Continue Reading “What? A Skink.”

Long Stick – Small Hole

A couple of years ago, I filmed a Chickadee exploring a hole in an old gate post that was created when the latch hardware was removed or fell from the post. I was very excited to think that the Chickadee might claim the cavity… Continue Reading “Long Stick – Small Hole”

Neighbors Raising Broods

Everything I’ve ever read about Eastern Bluebirds is that they are quite territorial and that they will only set up house at a distance of at least 300 feet from another breeding pair. I’ve always thought that the range of any species is dependent… Continue Reading “Neighbors Raising Broods”
