A Bounty of Bobolinks

Up until about five days ago, I had only seen three, individual Bobolinks – over the period of three years. My only photo of this species was a sketchy picture in which the bird was obscured by the leaves of a tree. But that… Continue Reading “A Bounty of Bobolinks”

Staying Young

I don’t know if it’s merely a result of the times or that I am just getting old. But, I can’t keep up with all the slang words that are routinely toss around. Is “sick” good, really? One word that took me a while… Continue Reading “Staying Young”

Bath Time!

I came upon this Savannah Sparrow seeming quite content to enjoy a nice bath. The Savannah Sparrow species only migrates through our area, so I feel lucky to have captured this precious moment.

More Seasonal Arrivals

A couple weeks ago I posted images of some of the early arrivals; birds that will spend their summer here: More recently I have spotted additional species that I’ve been waiting to see. The first Flycatcher species I saw, an Eastern Phoebe, was perched… Continue Reading “More Seasonal Arrivals”

Take the Plunge

We are very fortunate to have erected a Purple Martin house and have these special birds show up only days later to raise their chicks. That was four years ago. Each year since then, we added additional housing for the growing flock. When I… Continue Reading “Take the Plunge”

A Pipit

What’s a Pipit? I spotted this bird at the top of a small tree near our pond, aimed my camera and snapped. I didn’t know what sort of bird it might be. Just moments before, I had seen the first Eastern Kingbird of the… Continue Reading “A Pipit”

Perilous Parenting

This Killdeer was milling about an infrequently used driveway at our place. I was in a golf cart. When I stopped to take photos of a Bluebird in a nearby tree, the Killdeer hunkered down in the rocks about 15 feet from me. I… Continue Reading “Perilous Parenting”

Daddy’s Home!

“Daddy’s home. He brought dinner!” “What did he bring?” “Arachnid Crudo! Your favorite!” This is a male Eastern Bluebird. He is delivering food to his recently hatched chicks. Both parents hunt tirelessly to feed their brood. Here’s a photo of those babies.

Migration Visitors

I was excited to see a small group of shorebirds show up at our pond’s edge for a “travel stop” along their exceedingly long migration from South America to the far northern tip of North America. I’m not very competent at species identification of… Continue Reading “Migration Visitors”

Sleepy Tree Man

There’s a large tree at the corner of our property where I often spot or hear woodpeckers (Red-headed, Red-bellied and Downy.) This tree has some curious characteristics that appear to be an old man’s head, and I call it Sleepy Tree Man. There’s a… Continue Reading “Sleepy Tree Man”
