Sleepy Tree Man

There’s a large tree at the corner of our property where I often spot or hear woodpeckers (Red-headed, Red-bellied and Downy.) This tree has some curious characteristics that appear to be an old man’s head, and I call it Sleepy Tree Man.

There’s a hole above the “nose” that appears to be in living tree flesh, and not where I normally see woodpeckers making their cavity nests. The top of the tree has several dead branches, probably due to past lightening strikes, where I am more likely to see the birds.

Yesterday, a Red-headed woodpecker was partially entering the hole and I wonder if he was hunting insects that make a living in that area.
