Inspired by Dogs & Nature
I encountered this interesting insect, the Hummingbird Moth feeding on Milkweed by our pond.
It’s behavior actually caused me to think it was a Ruby-throated Hummingbird (the only species of Hummingbirds in our area.) But, it turned out to be this unique moth.
It may appear to be sitting still with outstretched wings in some of the photos, but I can assure you it was in constant motion. Only about 10 percent of my photos showed that more than just a blur of wing beats.
The next couple of shots show how long the proboscis (mouth) is that is uses to sip nectar.
This last photo shows a bumble bee (don’t know the species – maybe a Carpenter Bee) on the left in comparison to the Hummingbird Moth on the right.
The Nessus sphinx moth! I just saw my first one a few weeks ago.
Great photos of yours.
Thank you…. The “Hummingbird Moth” must just be a local, common description. Thanks for clarifying.
