The male Ruby-throated Hummingbirds left for their winter residence a couple of weeks ago. The females and the next generation remain, getting plump for their exceedingly long trip to Central America.
I have nectar feeders hanging on my office patio which these little gems take advantage of. I also have a small herb garden. I was excited to film a hummer taking nectar from the flowers of a Thai basil plant!
A few individuals took short breaks in the thorny branches of an old rose bush. I love to capture one with its eyes closed. Have you ever truly asked, “Do hummingbirds have eye lashes?” Yes. They do!
Even more rare a capture is a full frontal image of a hummer with its eyes closed! I have never taken a picture of this subject until now.
I found it curious that one of the birds chose to take her breaks on a seed feeder. I contemplated if she was wondering what it might be like to be a “big bird.” Maybe she just thought it was a good place to take a little nap.
I suppose it may feel safe to perch in the thorns.
It’s probably easier to take a quick nap if you feel protected.
I wish them well on their big trip. I’ll miss them. I will hang the nectar in April to welcome them back.
