Lucky Capture

My lens was pointed toward an Eastern Bluebird nest box when I noticed a very small, “whiteness” in the top of an old tree about 650 feet away – at the SE corner of our property. I know distances on our farm because when we first moved here, we were training and trialing working Border Collies and we put up fencing to create fields which met the criteria for different organizations’ herding trial courses.

At 650 feet, my old eyes didn’t see a bird. They just saw something unusually lighter than expected probably about 90 feet up in that tree. I aimed my camera and snapped a few shots before I even checked whether there was anything important there. Birds have a tendency to fly off before I get the chance to make a decision whether I should shoot, so I shoot first and discard about 75% of what I take.

I was lucky to get these photos of this amazingly beautiful Red-shouldered hawk. I could hear him screeching as he took off. I’m an amateur, at best, so for me these are lucky captures and I’m glad I shot first or I would have missed them.
