DIY Projects Are Messy

Do-It-Yourself home improvement projects can be messy.

I watched this American Robin flying to and from the edge of our pond, where it collected mud, presumably to build a new nest. I’ve seen this before. They “sop up” the mud on some vegetation then carry it off to their nest site. I’ve read that males bring building materials to the female, and she actively builds the nest.

If you aren’t familiar with this species, it’s very common in the United States where in many places it resides year ’round. The zone map also shows that some Robins migrate to nearly all of Canada during the breeding season, while others may travel down to Mexico during the winter.

Here’s a photos of a Robin that’s looking quite dapper. I took this photo in a different location on our farm. We have many Robins here, but in deep winter I don’t see them. I assume they travel south where they can find the insects, worms and grubs that they eat.
