And….Action!

A few days ago, Robert and I set up a new bird feeding station out in the north end of the Pond Meadow. I have feeders on my back patio that support some of the more common species like Goldfinches, House Finches, an occasional Northern Cardinals or even a Rose-breasted Grosbeak upon arrival in the Spring. But, I wanted to draw in some of the other birds that will eat seed, fruits and nut offerings that might not make the flight from the “outer” areas up to our house. I’d love to attract the woodpeckers and Nuthatches, for example.

The new station has a platform for seeds and nuts, a tubular feeder that I have filled with a suet-peanut pellet product and a shepherd’s crook on which I have hung a mealworm and sunflower seed kernel “bell.” It took a few days, but the birds have discovered the new Diner and are acclimating to my presence in the golf cart. Yesterday, I was able to park within about 25 feet, which is sufficient for decent photos – if I can get my act together as a photographer!

On this page I am sharing some of the more interesting shots I was able to capture. While they are not necessarily stellar as high quality photographs, the subjects make up for a bit of blurriness or bad lighting!

  1. Dear Tammy, the White Crowned Sparrow you describe as Juvenile is an adult Tan Striped version. The white and tan striped birds are assortativity mating on their breeding grounds. Tan prefer tan and white prefers white. This is a Sparrow undergoing an evolution into 2 species. It is early in it’s progress. Young white crowned sparrows have a dusky breast with a central spot.

    • What Rhetta Jack says actually applies to White-throated, not White-crowned, Sparrows. Your photo is correctly labeled as a juvenile White-crowned.
