Birdhouse “J” is located north of our farm pond, in a low area where, during heavy rains, a temporary stream forms which funnels the run off into the pond. I wasn’t sure if the birds would like this spot – as it’s low, but it’s also out in the open where Bluebirds prefer.
This Eastern Bluebird pair has set up house and is now feeding chicks.
In these photos (and the video) you’ll see that both parents are taking advantage of the many wild Mulberry fruits. We have at least two, maybe more, species of Mulberry here. What I find interesting about these trees is that the berries mature across a fairly long time span. That means that the fruit eating bird species can take advantage of their offerings for many weeks.
In these photos the female arrives with a white mulberry. I’m not sure if that’s a mature berry from a White Mulberry tree, or an immature berry from a Red Mulberry tree (as the fruits move from a white color to a deep purple color as they mature.) I would think the immature fruit wouldn’t be good for the chicks, but I’m going with “mother knows best,” when it comes to this mystery.
Papa bird decides to depart until Wifie is done feeding the kids. I’m always amazed at how the birds use any sort of breeze to take off from a stationary position – then do a 180 degree turn.
I switched to Video mode and captured the male arrive, again! This time he didn’t want to miss the chance to deliver his berry to his kids.
