I describe the type of Leadership that dog require as benevolent because, in my line of work as a dog trainer, I have learned that many people believe that leadership requires excessive force. On the contrary, dogs can recognize an individual has rank without being treated harshly. Dogs are social, and want to know where they exist in the hierarchy. That information need not be beaten into the beast, but it must be clearly communicated and reinforced. It is the goodwill of the leader to provide what the dog requires to feel safe and accepted.

Without willing followers, there are no leaders.
