Inspired by Dogs & Nature
Several weeks ago I hung an apple in a tree and lured Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Catbirds and House Finches in for a snack. When we put up a new feeding platform out in the Pond Meadow, I thought we might be able to satisfy the cravings of some of the birds that will spend the winter here. It worked!
A couple of days ago we put out fresh, red grapes along with the peanuts, safflower and sunflower seeds and a bit of peanut butter smeared on the feeding station. Today, the sun finally shined bright and I was able to capture a lovely Northern Mockingbird that was obviously in the mood for a bit of fruit.
It was a quick, but very productive visit and this bird showed his capacity to wrangle a grape to perfection! He grabbed a bit of peanut butter that he found on an apple we hung, as well. Then, he was outta here.
Great pics – this mocker looks so happy!
Thanks for sharing your great pictures! I sure wish Mockingbirds weren’t such rare visitors up here in the Chicago area. I’ve only seen them on trips to Washington, DC and New Orleans.
It’s my pleasure. I grew up in McHenry and when we moved down here (from southern WI) I kept hearing ALL THESE BIRDS singing in the early morning hours. Then, I discovered it was a Mockingbird! We have many of them around the property. They aren’t too shy, so it’s easy to watch them.
So sweet! Thank you for posting these!
